Stepping stones
Flat stones set on a gravel bed, guiding each step in silence.
Choosing the stone
Pick slabs 4–8 cm thick and 30–50 cm wide: local sandstone, slate, basalt or granite with a non-slip grain when wet. Local stone cuts transport emissions and blends into the landscape.
Laying on a draining bed
Excavate 10–15 cm, compact a 0/20 gravel base, then bed each stone on stabilised sand. Allow 55–65 cm centre to centre for a natural stride.
Care and season
Hand weeding and a gravel top-up each spring are enough. With no watering, the path stays usable during water restrictions. November is a good time to lay: workable soil, no heat.
